DENTISTRY

Dentistry is the field of Dental Medicine that addresses dental lesions, whether caused by trauma or by cavities. Dentistry allows teeth to regain their aesthetic, anatomical, and functional properties. The treatment of these lesions is carried out with materials that replace the lost structure of the tooth.

WHY AND FOR WHOM?

The detection of cavities in an early stage is not easy and is normally only possible by dentists. Therefore, maintaining the habit of visiting your dentist regularly is the best way to prevent more serious injuries.

If you notice any color changes, such as white, yellowish, brown, or black spots on the top surfaces of your teeth (grooves and fissures), you should consult your dentist. Cavities between the teeth can potentially be detected when using dental floss, as it may get caught or frayed in their presence.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

When the cavity only affects the enamel and dentin, the treatment consists of removing the structure of the affected tooth and reconstructing it. The removal of decayed tissue is performed using rotary instruments.

Currently, composite resins (tooth-colored materials) are the aesthetic material of choice for restoring both posterior and anterior teeth, done directly in a single session. For posterior teeth, silver amalgam, which is a metallic alloy, may still be used.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dental caries is an infectious disease spread by multiple factors, with Streptococcus mutans being the main cause. The bacteria found in the mouth convert food residues into acids, which are formed through the fermentation process and attack the mineralized tissues of the teeth.

  • Insufficient brushing can cause food debris to accumulate on the surface of the teeth, thus helping bacteria adhere to the teeth, forming plaque or bacterial biofilms. This creates an ideal environment for bacteria to convert sugars from food into acid, which demineralizes the tooth enamel, leading to cavities.

    Fluoride has the ability to inhibit tooth decay formation, but due to its toxicity, it must be used with caution. Cavities can affect:

  • enamel - no symptoms;
  • dentin - sensitivity exists;
  • pulp - pulpitis (intense and sharp pain)

To prevent dental caries, the following factors should be considered:

  • Good hygiene habits (proper brushing and flossing)
  • Balanced diet (reducing sugar intake)
  • Use of fluoride (Pediatric Dentistry)
  • Sealant application (pediatric dentistry)
