Endodontics

Endodontics is the specialty responsible for the treatment of diseases of the dental pulp, commonly known as tooth devitalization or root canal treatment.

WHY AND FOR WHOM?

A root canal treatment is performed when the dental pulp is inflamed or damaged due to factors such as: cavities, fractures, infiltrated restorations, or dental trauma.

HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?

In endodontic treatment, the soft tissue found in the innermost part of the tooth, known as the pulp, is removed. This pulp can be healthy or infected, and when removed, it is replaced with an artificial material.

One of the most characteristic symptoms is spontaneous pain, meaning the tooth starts to hurt without any stimulus, in a throbbing manner. In this case, the pulp is still alive, but inflamed, and the use of painkillers does not help. When the pulp dies, the pain is well-localized, with a sensation of the "tooth being higher" and pain while chewing.

If endodontic treatment is not performed, a lesion can develop in the apical region (tip of the root), which will lead to more serious consequences, such as intense pain, swelling (abscess), fever, among other symptoms.

By treating cavities early, we can avoid endodontics, thus saving suffering, time, and money.
